‘I can perhaps take up work somewhere nearby,’ Eva ventured. ‘Maybe even the Blakes —’

‘They do not need another servant. And do you, in truth, think they will agree? You may be down to your last sou, Mrs Rheese, and the Blakes will be in agony to hear of your plight were you to tell them — but they will not employ you. They will probably not turn you out, either; I think they are too kind to do that. But I do not think you will be happy to accept charity such as that.

‘I am sorry,’ he added, in a milder tone. ‘That pained you, I know. It pained me, too, but it is the truth.’ He reached for his cup and lifted it to his lips. ‘No; you can safely put away all thoughts of finding employment with the Blakes. Even if they did allow you to do some genteel sort of work — what, in an establishment such as this, that could be, escapes me — what would they pay you? It would certainly not be enough to pay for the lodging and boarding of both you and your maid, and certainly not for whatever medical help may be required.’ He took a sip of the coffee. ‘And there is, I fear, no place nearby where you may hope to gain any sort of employment that may be of use. This is a hamlet, madam, no more. A few poor scattered houses, and that is all.’
